November 28, 2009 DRINKING WATER WARNING Water delivered by Portland Water Bureau, Burlington, Palatine Hill, and Valley View Water Districts could be contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria PORTLAND WATER BUREAU CUSTOMERS WEST OF THE WILLAMETTE RIVER AND CUSTOMERS OF BURLINGTON, PALATINE HILL AND VALLEY VIEW WATER DISTRICTS SHOULD BOIL WATER BEFORE USING Routine water quality samples for total coliforms, including E. coli, were confirmed for fecal contamination in a Washington Park open reservoir on November 28, 2009. Fecal coliforms and E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these waters can cause short-term effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. These symptoms are not only caused by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice. People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. What Should I do? What does this mean to me? DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST OR USE BOTTLE WATER. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Bring all water to a rolling boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. What is being done? The Portland Water Bureau has taken the reservoir out of service. We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water. We anticipate resolving the problem within 24 hours. For more information, please contact Portland Water Bureau at 503-823-7770 or 1120 SW 5th Ave., Portland, OR, 97204. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

So like three weeks ago I called Comcast and ordered digital voice (phone) service to be added to the Internet service I have already. They're suppose to ship me a self-install kit in about three days and then I can just plug it in and go. Four days later, no kit, so I call and they tell me to wait longer. A few days after that, I call and they tell me it was never shipped(!) but they'll ship it now. A week after that, today, I call and they tell me the order was cancelled! Seriously, how fucking incompetent can you be, especially at the sales end.
Then, today I managed to put my goddamn cell phone through the washing machine. So now I have no phones. Great.
Edit: OK, so after placing my order yet again, they tell me I can pick up the equipment in person at the local office. Which is great, but it is pretty lame they didn't tell me that in the first place, since that could have avoided this mess, not to mention a substantial shipping fee they charge. I go down there to pick it up, where it turns out they STILL don't have my order, so I place it again and get the equipment. Turns out it replaces my current modem so now I have to go back there AGAIN to return my current modem - if they'd mentioned that in the first place I could have done it all in one trip. Also, to activate the new phone line, I need a separate phone line. That's right, to activate your phone line you need to have a phone line. I wonder what genius came up with that system.

Portland chefs, TV's 'Top Chef' wants you! October 30, 2009, 2:20PM Bravo TVStephanie Izard, the winner of Season 4 of Bravo TV's "Top Chef." The top-rated cable program is coming to Portland in search of cooking talent for its seventh season.Bravo's "Top Chef" is one of the best reality series on TV. It scores among the highest rated cable programs. And its current season, which is unwinding in the outrageous culinary kingdom of Las Vegas, features some of the best cooking you'll find on television. The big problem: In its six seasons on the air, "Top Chef" has yet to feature a chef from Portland, which is strange given all the national love that's bestowed on our food scene by Food & Wine magazine, which figures prominently in the program's judging. Portland chefs, here's your chance to change that. On Sunday, Nov. 15, scouts from the show will be in Portland to audition local talent. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., they'll set up shop at downtown's Benson Hotel, and potential contestants just need to show up with a completed application and a test video (details can be found here). No appointments -- or knives -- are necessary. From Bravo's website, here's exactly what they're looking for: "Chefs with a passion for food, creativity, a thorough knowledge of cooking techniques and trends and oodles of charisma are what we're looking for. We want talented, experienced chefs with that flare that puts you over the top." Having good looks and an armload of tattoos apparently doesn't hurt, either. Hmmm. Passion. Creativity. Charisma. Mad cooking skills. Who on Earth could they be looking for? No word yet on where or when Season 7 will be filmed, but in addition to Sin City, past locations have been San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and New York, so it's likely to land in a city with similar star power. Earlier this year, "Top Chef's" casting team held auditions in Seattle for the current season, which airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. Although they actively sought Portland chefs to try out, none made the final cut. Two Seattle chefs did, however, and one of them -- Robin Leventhal -- is among the six contestants still cooking.
